Sexism

Many people think that there's no sexism in this society anymore, since women are allowed to work and get paid the same as men, and they can wear whatever they want, etc.

But if you think there' s no sexism in our society, you need a reality check!!!

SEXISM IN ADVERTISING

It's no coincidence that most advertisements use women. Half-naked women. Or even naked women with objects strategically placed to make the picture appropriate for public viewing.

What is up with that?! What gives them the right to use a woman's body as an object to sell things?

The human body is supposed to be something beautiful, just like everything else in nature. But we have turned it into an object we sell.

Because what's being sold isn't a car, or lingerie, or a magazine. People buy the stuff because they associate it to a naked woman.

It's selling women's bodies, NOT the product itself.

When people see a woman standing half naked next to a car, they suddenly expect all women to behave like that, and act like sluts.

Basically, the fact that one woman dresses in skimpy outfits brings down the level of respect most men have for women, and even worse, the amount of respect women have for themselves.

SEXIST LANGUAGE

malenurse.jpg

femalebusdriver.jpg

Referring to a person in a certain career as 'he' or 'she' only, based on a stereotype ("she" for a nurse, "he" for a bus driver).

Using male pronouns to refer to both males and females (businessman, salesman, etc.).

We say sexist things without even realizing it!

While this may not be very serious (just saying it), it does cause us to discriminate against people who work in jobs that do not "belong" to their gender (e.g. a male nurse, a female busniessperson).

This results in people staying away from careers that are considered "men's jobs" or "women's jobs", for fear of being laughed at or ridiculed. You'd be surprised at how much fear of rejection and ridicule can influence a person's life choices. Why should a person get to keep a person away from a career that would satisfy them just because they think it's "only a woman's job"?

Another form of sexism is using insulting words for just one gender. One that infuriates me the most is the use of the word "bitch" to refer to a female. It's no longer used to insult a person (and even then it shouldn't be used at all!), but to refer to them. It's as if it has entered the list of acceptable terms for referring to a female. Girl, woman, and bitch.

Am I the only one that thinks this is absolutely disgusting?

Maybe not. But there's still an awful lot of people who think this is okay. That number of people who think it's okay need to be educated so that they understand that it's not okay. We need to change this!

VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

We hear about violence against women so many times. But have you ever wondered why it's called "violence against WOMEN"?

We live in a patriarcal society. This means that for a long time males in society have had more power than women.

While it's not a lot like that anymore, there are still men that believe that they should have more power than women. So when women stand up for themselves, of course there is no better way to keep them in line than to beat them!

This is simply horrible. This is one of the biggest signs, I believe, that our society is a lot more sexist than we believe. We shouldn't allow men to have this much control over women. But women also shouldn't think that if they were to beat men it would solve the problem. I think this is where most people go wrong.

"It's simple," a lot of people say. "if a man beats a woman, then the man has the advantage. But if a woman beats a man, then the woman has the advantage."

Advantage. That's the word that's the problem. NOBODY SHOULD HAVE THE ADVANTAGE OVER ANYBODY ELSE! What's the point of talkin about equality amongst the sexes if we're arguing about who has the advantage while beating each other up?!

It sounds ridiculous, doesn't it?

That's because it IS ridiculous.

We shouldn't be trying to get even. We should be trying to stop it altogether.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT

sexualharassment1.jpg

I know what you're thinking.

Sexual harassment?

What does that have to do with sexism?

I'll tell you what it has to do with sexism!

Picture this:
A girl is walking down the street in the middle of summer, wearing a short skirt and a tank top. She passes a group of teenage boys. What do you think will happen?

Of course you're gonna say something along the lines of "They'll whistle at her" or "They'll call out to her".

And of course that's what's going to happen.

Sexual harassment: [1] any unwanted act of a sexual nature inflicted upon a person by another.
[2] something a lot of teenage girls undergo every day, even in places where we don't expect them to.

I was walking to class last year when I witnessed something so disgusting I couldn't believe it could happen at school. A girl was walking down the hall with two friends when a guy came up behind her and grabbed her butt before running down the hall to join his stupid, immature, giggling friends.

He was too much of a coward to show his face to her (he came up BEHIND her). He was probably trying to make himself to look "cool" in front of his friends. But, what disgusts me the most is that he sexually harassed a girl, and not only did he do it in a school building, where students should be safe from this sort of thing, but he got away with it, too.

And it's just that that bothers me. So many people get away with sexual harassment. So many people think that reporting sexual harassment is spoiling people's fun, that telling a person to stop harassing them makes them look like wusses.

But they SHOULDN'T be able to get away with it!
They SHOULD report sexual harassment!
They SHOULD spoil those people's sick fun!

But, most importantly, they shouldn't be afraid of looking like "wusses" for insisting on being treated with respect!

If a person doesn't insist on being treated with respect, nobody is going to respect them! I know that sounds incredibly cliche, but it's true. If a person doesn't stop sexual harassment, it'll just keep happening and that person will lose all their self-worth.

What does this have to do with sexism?

Usually it's girls who are harassed by boys.

And this needs to be stopped.

sexismstillexists.jpg

Sexism is a very serious problem in today's society and it needs to be stopped. We have to quit thinking in sexist terms.

Nothing makes men better than women.

Nothing makes women better than men.

WE ARE EQUAL!!!

And if males and females are equal, like our society claims they are (even though they obviously aren't treated that way), we have to stop thinking about things as 'he' or 'she'.

We have to start thinking about things the way they are. Not worthy of 'he' or worthy of 'she'. Just worthy of things equally. It's not that hard. We just have to change our mindframe. If we all do this, we can work together to get rid of sexism and start living in a society where there is "equality amongst the sexes".
